Be a Happier Nurse
Happiness at Work
Friday, 05 February 2010 00:00

ClaireBe a Happier nurse!

3 easy tips:

Decide to be happier whatever is happening – ask others to create a 'complaint free zone' at work where no whingeing goes on and positive conversations can be had.

Find ways to boost others happiness which will in turn give you the 'feel-good' factors. Give genuine compliments and tell others when they have done a good job. Be kind to everyone – patients, peers, your manager and yourself, nurture each other and create a safe scape to work together.

Pick 3 things that are really causing you stress in work or outside and do something about them this week. Find 3 things that you love to do in or out of work and do them this week.

Each week take away 3 stresses and add in 3 activities to make you happier – at then end of 4 weeks you will be 12 items less stressful and 12 times happier!

Come and be inspired!

a job that fits..
Happiness at Work

What happens if you think you don't even want to be a nurse any more? You have always been a nurse and it is part of your identity......you have responsibilities, a mortgage and so on, how will you make money?

These are some of the questions I get asked by nurses via email and also while coaching them. Ask yourself what it is you love about your job, and what you would like to change.

What do you love to do outside work that might make you some money?

What skills do you have that you could teach others or use in a different way? Communication, colour, dexterity, learning, writing and so on.

Know that many nurses transition into jobs they love – both in nursing and outside it – and working with a coach is the first step to making it real for you.

Maybe you do not need to leave nursing, but instead need a job that suits you more, new challenges or a happier home life instead....?

stand out
Happiness at Work

ClaireNurses' jobs have been in the news again – with many trainee nurses unable to get jobs with one of them pulling pints at a pub instead of working as a nurse. Many students seem to leave finding a job until the last minute and  not applying themselves to the process. I have had discussions with one nurse who is newly qualified and applied for several jobs, looked at what she really wanted in a  role and kept taking action until in the end she was offered 4 to choose from.

So, what set her apart?

Firstly she was involved with the RCN so that showed a level of commitment to nursing. She had a checklist of items that she wanted in a role, rather than being more passive and waiting to see what jobs came up. She spent time and effort finding jobs, talking to people and getting others to know her, not just looking online or in journals for jobs.

If you are looking for a nursing job then be clear what you are looking for, take action to contact employers and managers and talk to them, be a great candidate and have something that allows you to stand out above the others. If there are few jobs and lots of applicants, it is a competition after all!

Claire & Johnnie - training partnersStep 6 - Apply for jobs you like and attend the interview.

As you will have done so much work on matching yourself to the job it can be relatively straightforward to explain why you are a good match for the role. You will feel prepared and confident as you will know exactly what it is you were looking for. Make sure by your questions that this role is the one you expected it to be, and make sure the match really is there. This will make it a successful partnership between you and the employer!

Come on the happynurses course on October 24th/25th in Cheltenham and find a job you love in 12 weeks!

Find the job you love!
Happiness at Work

Step 5 – Look for the nursing job you have created!

This is easier than it sounds. Imagine you were just looking for ‘a car’ there are too many places and possibilities. If you know which type of car you want it is easier to find it. The more specific you are about the role you want, the easier it is to find.

Tell the people you work with and all your contacts what you are looking for. Jobs are not always advertised so call units and departments and ask if you can visit them. Even if they don’t have a job right now, they may remember you when they do. Start to create a relationship with the person who runs the unit and be on their mind, some places allow you to submit a CV, but always make sure you have been there in person so that know who you are!

Step 4Create a picture of your ideal role from all the information you have.

What hours do you want to work? What sort of environment, and who with? What type of clients or patients do you want to care for? Who would be in your nursing team?

Put as much detail into this vision as you can in order to create a full picture of it. Write it all down along with all the other information you have gathered, and get ready for step 5!

Claire & co trainer Johnnie CassStep 3how does your job fit into your life as a whole? How do you want your life to be?

Use the ‘Wheel of Life’ for this – a great tool available in my book, and which gives clarity and direction in life.

Identify what is important to you in life – what are your values, and how can your role at work fit with them? Do you like variety, stability, family or health? Are you up for adventure and excitement and does your nursing job give you this or can you find it elsewhere if not?

Step 2 – Look at your job and identify what you like about it and what you don’t.

Which nursing tasks do you love to do and give you a feeling of fulfilment and joy? When are you most connected with your job? What makes you feel happy and as if you are doing something worthwhile? Which type of patients do you love to care for?

Then look at what you don’t like –the stresses, or tasks you dislike. Write all this information down.

For more information come on the course on October 24th/25th in Cheltenham and look at your jobs in detail.

Happiness at Work

Claire WestwoodI have been working with several coaching clients to find a job in nursing that they really love, and have been doing this generally within 12 weeks. If you want to know how to do it yourself, then read on!

Step 1know who you are. This is vital. You need to know what you really love to do and what type of personality you have. Do you like to be part of a team or work alone? Are you a good leader or would you rather be one of the crowd? Do you like fast paced work or more detailed, slower pace? Be as specific as you can about this. Find your signature strengths at

Creating your ideal life....
Happiness at Work
Wednesday, 21 January 2009 00:00

PICT0002 I love vision boards - I am highly visual and like to create collages of what I want in life and where I want to be going. This is one I created after the 'Billionaire Bootcamp' course last summer. Some of the words might be baffling to you, but they have emotional intensity and relevance to me so I put them in.

We studied some billionaires on the course, and the ones I admire most and can relate to are Oprah and Richard Branson so they are on there with me!

Of course, the other additional ingredient needed is to take action in the direction of what you want. Visualise your future and start to take some steps forward - the picture is just a start.....

The Law of Attraction....or persistence at work!
Happiness at Work
Wednesday, 20 August 2008 00:00
Claire_happynurse

I have been attracting some amazing opportunities in the last 2 weeks.

I returned from the Billionaire Boot-camp full of information and ideas to help me build my business and my wealth, but it initially felt like there was so much to think about I didn't know where to start.

It took 2 weeks to all settle and then - ping! - I had a breakthrough! The people who did better in the games were those who went for the bigger deals, and negotiated some huge contracts instead of plying small with 90% of us.....ooohh!!

So, my intention was then to look for ways and take action that would get me involved in bigger projects than getting one nurse at a time to the website. This working well with new nurses signing up each week, and I have over 100 signed up now, but the off-line part is raring to go now.

I have had discussions with 2 Trusts re coaching, and am working through Bernadette Doyle's 'How To Attract Corporate Clients' which has given me some amazing tools to use to get happynurses and me established in my niche, with a great illustration of my expertise.

More details later.......!

I have been interviewed for the NMC magazine, and am writing some stuff for the Reader's Digest regarding health and caring for people at home, using my nursing expertise.

What would you like to attract into your life, happynurses?

Happy NHS
Happiness at Work
Monday, 11 August 2008 00:00

How can the NHS be a happier place to work in?

I have been reading and reviewing a lot of articles and surveys recently and it seems that there are many factors that affect how happy people feel at work.

The worst aspects of working for the NHS are: paperwork, bureaucracy, slow pace of change, feeling insignificant and not being supported by managers.

The best things are: doing something important, feeling part of a team, good pension, ability to learn and develop.

If you are a manager in the NHS then spend some time thinking how you can make your staff feel more included.

Ask them what they want!

There can be the feeling that this will 'open a can of worms' or start them complaining. Believe me, they are complaining now, but not to anyone who can do anything about it. If you know how they feel and where you stand, then you can start to change things.

Ignorance is the worst thing because then you can only make assumptions from your own viewpoint.

The joy of nursing
Happiness at Work
Monday, 02 June 2008 00:00

This weekend I went to work as a nurse for the first time in a while. It was great to feel I had some energy to do a full shift!

I had lovely weekend as I am not embroiled in the politics of the unit any more - there is still a lot for nurses to moan about. The problem is that none of them are looking for solutions or support through happynurses or other means, but go round in circles complaining as if it's someone else's job to do something.

The first principle of coaching is that you must take responsibility for your life - your job, happiness, health and relationships are all a reflection of what choices you have made and the action you have taken.

Things can always be different, but it means you have to DO something different. Look at new jobs, but be clear who you are and which one would make you happy.

Buy the e-book 'How to be Happier at Work' and do the exercises. No-one else cares as much about your life and happiness as YOU.

Get a coach and make rapid progress - call me or email me, happynurses!

Being a great leader
Happiness at Work
Wednesday, 28 May 2008 00:00

I was reviewing the book 'Employee Well-being and Support' for the Nursing Standard and some important items really leaped out at me. One chapter was about leadership, and it explained some real physical and emotional effects of a poor manager.

It discussed a study that showed nurses who had a manager who was seen as unfair and punitive by workers, raised nurses' blood pressure! It was measurably lower on days when they had manager who was seen as fair. Imagine, just by treating people badly, or well, you can affect their blood pressure and over a period of time, their cardio-vascular health.

Be a great leader and help your team to have better health, happynurses!

RCN congress - reflections
Happiness at Work
Friday, 02 May 2008 00:00

The two days I spent at the RCN Congress were highly educational, although not in the way I had perhaps intended. I managed to visit the exhibition space a few times and talk to some of the exhibitors, look at the free items they were giving away, and also Think about what I would/will do next year.

I realised that the reason I had not done more was that I am at the beginning of the marketing cycle with the brand etc and also that I have finite amounts of time and energy.

It was great to hear from so many passionate and inspiring nurses about projects they are doing. I attended a coaching seminar and there was lots of interest in the topic - again good for me.

I now have lots of info to follow up, as well as my first really positive meeting today re training for nurses on life balance, so am feeling like there are really good things happening.....

What do you feel right now, happynurses?

RCN congress - next step!
Happiness at Work
Sunday, 27 April 2008 00:00

Dscf1976_2 Back to Bournemouth this afternoon. I am spending 3 days at the RCN congress, immersed in the world of nursing and all its development, issues and leadership.

I have a bag full of business cards, my e-book printed out, all my articles printed and in a file, and some goals and targets for the 3 days. I am open to all sorts of unexpected and amazing developments and meetings, whatever may come my way.

I intend to:

  • Meet 5 senior people in the nursing world (I am open to who they might be)
  • Give out 100 cards a day to nurses and tell them about happynurses
  • Speak to all the exhibitors about what I do
  • Work out a plan for next year - keynote speaker/ exhibitor/ both

Come and say hello if you are there!

Here's to more happynurses!

valuing staff
Happiness at Work
Monday, 31 March 2008 00:00

An item in the Nursing Standard last week stated that doctors have 40 times more money invested in their post-qualification training than nurses....40 TIMES!!!

Then I go to work and find an email saying that all non-mandatory training for nurses is suspended.......and they wonder why nurses are demoralised. Our measly one-fortieth of the doctors' training budget is cut to nil, except those training days we have to do to remain safe practitioners.

How do they expect innovative, educated nurses to stay in this environment? With many nurses now graduates, and with some very transferable skills, they could be looking at mass exodus...who knows? Most nurses still want to be nurses, but they want to feel valued and have some kind of career progression, and to be treated the same as medical staff.

Start to point out these discrepancies! Be assertive, happynurses.
