The Inspired Leadership webinar is THIS WEDNESDAY so click on this link for all your details and get 90 minutes inspiration direct through your computer... https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/875488697 If you have never attended a webinar before (and most of you won't!) then follow the instructions in the link and be online at 8pm on June 23rd – this Wednesday! The second secret of inspired leadership is Clarity Being clear in our communication is important as discussed last week as well as having clarity of vision. A coaching approach allows a vision to be created. You can create a vision and as an Inspired Leader it is a great tool to have. This is for your life as a whole, your team or role and particular projects. So many people are overwhelmed and this is partly because they have no clear direction that they are going in, so all tasks seem just as important as others. Conflict within teams can also flare up if there is no common vision. I am coaching a practice manager at the moment and one thing we have discussed recently is the vision for the practice. Because they don't have one, each professional group has its own agenda. This produces some conflict and also means that there is a lot of time spent doing activities that do not move them towards their vision (because there isn't one!).
With a clear vision it is more obvious what the priorities for action need to be. Saying 'no' and stopping doing things is as important as what you actually do. Free up some time to spend creating a vision and then make sure that what you do feeds in to that and moves you closer, rather than spending time on fire-fighting and 'urgent' tasks – some of which are not urgent! If you want help to create a team vision and focus your time then contact me to see how I can come into your organisation and help you. Join us on the webinar for more Inspired Leadership tips: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/875488697 Create a vision for your life and team this week, happynurses!

Hi all, I am writing this on the train coming back from speaking at the Association for Nurse Prescribing in Edinburgh and what a lovely event it was! I was running two break-out group sessions on 'Inspired Leadership' and it was great to be able to work with nurses face-to-face and give them some top tips. A lot of the nurses I spoke to feel very unsupported and have a real lack of confidence in their roles, although many of them are doing a superb job. The next 9 blogs will cover the 9 Secrets of Inspired Leadership which I have created from studying great leaders in all areas – health, business, politics and more. This is an introduction to the webinar on June 23rd which will cover these topics in more details - the link is at the bottom of this message. The content is an introduction to my new leadership programme which starts in September and will be done over the internet so there is no need to leave the house to attend! So let's crack on! The first secret of inspired leadership is communication. I joked today about the game 'Chinese whispers' which I am sure we have all played as children. By the time the message gets to the end of the line of people it bears no relation to what the original message was! Unfortunately this happens in our work lives too. Communication has a producer and a receiver. We often assume that our communication is clear but all receivers will receive the information and then filter it through their own beliefs, understanding and will make assumptions and often delete parts of the information. This is unconscious and is based on their previous experiences and attitudes. Messages get adapted, assumptions are made and the receiver of the information will interpret the message in a number of ways. This is true with any message – whether email, letter, spoken or written. Taking the time to find out whether the message has been received and understood is crucial. The receiver is the person who decides if the message was clear, not the sender. If you find that your team, clients/patients or peers are not clear what you mean it is up to you to find ways to communicate with them more clearly. Look at what words they use. If you work with other nationalities or young people, for example, you will find different words and terminology used and it is to your advantage to use the words they would use themselves. If they are from a very different educational background or are not from a nursing role you may use words they are very unfamiliar with. Everyday ideas and terminology to us can be frightening and confusing to others. To improve your communication – listen to the words that your team and clients/patients use and make sure you understand what they mean. Use their words back to them wherever possible and be aware that any time you communicate with another person there is the possibility of being mis-understood. | | | There are really exciting things happening in happynurses land. I will have my new product out very soon which is the ‘Coaching-in-a-box’ pack for finding a job you love. This is the same content that I work through with my 1:1 clients – full details once the product is online.
I am also launching a year-long programme for healthcare professionals (not just nurses!) who want to develop their leadership skills and build their confidence. I know a lot of people who are suffering from a lack of confidence or leadership skills and I also know that one-year programmes really produce amazing results as I have completed several of them myself. I am on one programme currently and after 3 months have found a real difference.
This programme will start in July and there will be a big launch on June 23rd at 20.00 with an ‘Inspired Leaders in Healthcare’ webinar. I am really excited about this opportunity and am sure that many of you will want to join in and develop your leadership skills and confidence with me in 2010/2011.
I am busy finding some incredible people to interview for the programme – from the health, business and personal development fields so it will give a really broad base of content from inside and outside the health arena.
Full details in the next ezine….watch this space (as they say!!)
So, for now, put June 23rd at 20.00 in your diary and get ready for some really exciting information coming soon…..

| | | Hello all – I hope you have enjoyed the gorgeous weather we have had this past week. It has really felt like summer!
I have dusted off my t-shirts and sandals and am starting to feel really summery – especially with the lighter evenings. It has also given me a feeling of a ‘new start’ as it feels like a new season. So, in order to do what I feel like doing I have started a new 12-week programme for myself and my life!
Those of you who have read this blog for a while will know that this is my favourite timescale for making changes as it is long enough to really get some good habits established and new ideas created. You can start TODAY. I read a great quote recently - every day is transformation day! – which I think sums it up. We often wait for ‘something’ to happen, while not being sure what that is!
Make today YOUR transformation day!
How will YOU know when you are ready to make some changes?
What area of life do you want to change first?
Where will you start?

Create a life you love!
I get several emails a week from nurses who are having a hard time at work. This could be due to issues with other staff members, depression and disillusionment with the job or just boredom and a lack of direction. I know what this is like as this is how I felt 14 years ago. I was fed up, bored, stressed and feeling like I had no idea what to do with my life. One thing I did know was that life could be different, and that I was capable of much more than just doing what I was doing then – being a stressed-out ward sister. Now my life certainly is very different! In the last few weeks here are some of the things I have done:
Started to go to the gym more regularly, and even went to running club and also have started a tennis course for the summer. I have spoken at 2 RCN conferences and met some lovely nurses. I have signed up more coaching clients and transformed more nurses’ lives, sometimes in one session! I have done some shifts but only day shifts and only when I am free (working as a bank nurse) I have joined a ‘mastermind’ group and created a whole new site and workshop: www.standoutandsucceed.com This included going to London and interviewing my mentors, working with a web creator and video tech to create the site and taking some huge steps forward. I have re-joined a business networking group and been to several business breakfasts and met some great business owners, had lots of fun and got some more potential referrals. All very different to going to work via the same route, having the same aggravation and learning nothing – which was me in 1998!
Have a Happy May Day and a great week! |

| | | I am so pleased that some of the projects I have been working on fo r ages are now coming to fruition. At the same time that I have been doing the happynurses events I have been working away in the office creating a written version of the 'Find a Job You Love' programme. This is a way you can work through the content at home and find which job would suit you and how to go about finding it. I have also been arranging a big business event and working with some of my heroes in this area . This is a photo of me and Nick Williams who is a globally renowned autho r and coach and whose books and seminars have helped me to get to where I am today. Without him I would never have reached my current position. http://www.standoutandsucceed.com I hope you will let me enable you to get to where you want to be. This blog will give you some more pointers...... Your assignments (in brief) so far have been: Buy a notebook to write all your ideas and information in as you work through the next few weeks. Make a list of everything you have ever done that you have enjoyed – whether that is at work or at home. This list should have 50 to 100 things on it! Really take the time to do this as you will often tap into things you had forgotten. Make a list of all the jobs you ever had – from your first Saturday job to the role you have now. Identify what you loved about each of those roles and why Put it all together and create an ideal role template
This week we will look at how to make a great impression and how to get the job you really want. If you see something you like the sound of – get on the phone and talk to them. Go for a visit, speak to people and find out if it really is something you would like. Talk to people who already work there about their experiences and get a more balanced view than given in an advert for the job. Following on from Wednesday's blog entry, look at all the aspects of a job you would love using all the things you have identified that you would love in that job. Include as many of the activities you enjoy as possible and be open to any jobs you see that appeal to you. Working through this can be hard on your own. Take some time out of your normal routine to work on YOU and YOUR LIFE. Do it for your development and to find a new way to live. You have less than 3 weeks to book on this weekend. Do yourself a real favour and come – get the kids looked after, swap your off-duty and come and change the way you feel about your life and work in 2 days! I have had a great few weeks travelling around doing talks. I have met nurses and health visitors in Leicester, London and Manchester and enjoyed spreading the word and also travelling around on the train and getting paid for it! If you want me to talk at your conference or meeting just get in touch -it's easy! I have also been reviewing my whole 'wheel of life' and have boosted up my social life – seeing old friends, spending time in my old city of Bath and also seeing more comedy. I am also looking at doing tennis lessons and another stand-up course as I loved these when I did them before. Do this for you too – use the list of activities you love and add more of them in to your schedule. As the weather gets better too you will feel more positive and uplifted by being with friends and spending time doing things you love. A quick review - Your assignments (in brief) so far have been:
 1. Buy a notebook to write all your ideas and information in as you work through the next few weeks. 2. Make a list of everything you have ever done that you have enjoyed – whether that is at work or at home. This list should have 50 to 100 things on it! Really take the time to do this as you will often tap into things you had forgotten. 3. Make a list of all the jobs you ever had – from your first Saturday job to the role you have now. 4. Identify what you loved about each of those roles and why
This week your task is to put this all together to identify which role would really suit you right now. This may be another role in nursing, it may be a sideways move or even a complete change like I had 10 years ago when I moved form Nursing into performing or again when I moved into my own coaching and training business! You can also do a combination of nursing plus something else – the great thing about being a nurse is that it can be done full-time/part-time or flexibly via a nurse bank or agency. You can use the other time to write, speak, train in something else or explore the world and your options- perhaps by doing voluntary work or a second part-time role in something totally different.

Following on from my blog earlier this week, you are creating the start of a blue-print for your ideal role...exciting isn't it? (Your ideal role may be one you have never heard of or didn't know existed, or one in a different field to nursing so keep an open mind about the information that comes up for you!) I knew that I loved being on stage and performing but was not clear how this fitted in with happynurses. Now I do training and speaking I use many of my performing skills and techniques so am using something from a hobby in my 'job'. Some of my clients have used this information to start a business or to add hobbies back in to their lives – walking or cooking, horse-riding and singing, This gives them a happier outlook in life and makes their job more enjoyable! For an inspiring weekend working through this information with the help and support of Claire look here. If you are ready to step up into a new job and way of life, then here is an offer just for YOU! You must be ready to make some changes in life and spend some time looking at who you are. You will be expected to take action after the session and stop complaining about life and move forward! If you are, then you can book a trial 30 minute 'life direction' telephone coaching session worth £97. Please email

2. Make a list of everything you have ever done that you have enjoyed – whether that is at work or at home. This list should have 50 to 100 things on it! Really take the time to do this as you will often tap into things you had forgotten.
3. What did you love to do when you were little?
4. What hobbies do you have or have you ever had?
5. What did you first love about your job?
6. What do you love about your job now?
7. Make a list of all the jobs you ever had – from your first Saturday job to the role you have now.
8. Identify what you loved about each of those roles and why.
9. Look at why you left each job and see if you can spot and patterns in the reason you left, or the timescale you tend to stay in each job.
10. Draw a timeline with the roles in at the different times in your life and identify some of the aspects that your roles have had in common.
11. Have you followed a 'traditional' path of promotion and development or have you left nursing/midwifery, tried other things, worked in a different way or returned to the job because you 'missed it?'
This week your task is to look at what you love about your current role. This is similar to the 'gratitude' journal or work that has been mentioned in other ezines. Make a list in your notebook of all the tasks you love to do in your current role and then add some of the things you enjoyed about previous jobs and no longer do. A quick review - Your assignment for last week was:
What did you love to do when you were little? What hobbies do you have or have you ever had? What did you first love about your job? What do you love about your job now? This week you will need your notebook again and you will now look in more detail at the jobs you have had in life so far. - Make a list of all the jobs you ever had – from your first Saturday job to the role you have now.
- Identify what you loved about each of those roles and why
- Look at why you left each job and see if you can spot and patterns in the reason you left, or the timescale you tend to stay in each job
- Draw a timeline with the roles in at the different times in your life and identify some of the aspects that your roles have had in common.
- Have you followed a 'traditional' path of promotion and development or have you left nursing/midwifery, tried other things, worked in a different way or returned to the job because you 'missed it?'
I have done all of these things and finding out some of my patterns was really valuable. I realised I need a change after around 2 years and many of my clients are the same. It may not be 'the job' that is an issue but your need for a new challenge! For an inspiring weekend working through this information with the help and support of Claire look here. |

So, how do you start to make changes? The first stage in finding a job you love is to know who you are. We all have 'labels' that we carry around in life – that of 'nurse'. 'midwife', 'Mum', 'single mum', 'divorcee', 'middle-aged', 'blonde', 'widow' etc.
These labels are not who we are but sometimes it feels like they are! You need to find out who you are under those labels. Assignment for this week:

- Buy a notebook to write all your ideas and information in as you work through the next few weeks.
- Make a list of everything you have ever done that you have enjoyed – whether that is at work or at home. This list should have 50 to 100 things on it! Really take the time to do this as you will often tap into things you had forgotten.
What did you love to do when you were little? What hobbies do you have or have you ever had? What did you first love about your job? What do you love about your job now?
You may wonder what this information has to do with a job you love.. Knowing who you are and what you enjoy will start to remind you of some of the possibilities you have outside the life you live now.
For an inspiring weekend working through this information with the help and support of Claire then book here. If you are a frustrated health professional and are ready to step up into a new job and way of life, then here is an offer just for YOU! As the days get longer and the weather improves it is time to remind ourselves that everything in life has seasons and changes. I meet a lot of people who say they 'don't like change' but change happens whether we like it or not. Staying where we are because it is 'easy' is sometimes what we end up doing, but it may not be what makes us happy. We can easily get stuck in a life and not see any way out of it. When I think back to my life a few years ago and realise how much I, and my life, have changed I cannot really believe it. I have only worked for 3 years full-time as a nurse, the other 7 I have wokred part-time and casually for agencies and as a bank nurse, while pursuing other things. I have been to performing arts college, sung in a band, done 'stand-up comedy', trained as a coach, launched a business, completed a 2-year advanced coaching and NLP programme, written a book and now coach, teach, speak, inspire, learn and grow every single day. I used to feel 'stuck' in my life and now have created a totally different existence so I know it is possible for you too.... If you think that 'It is all right for you, it would never work for me' then that is your biggest hurdle. If you could see what you are capable of if you stepped out of all that is holding you back, you would be amazed! Many of you, I know are barely coping with your work – you feel overwhelmed with the workload and some of you are feeling bullied by your peers or boss, and wondering if this is really what you want to do with the rest of your life. You do not have to feel like this any more. If you are ready to make some changes then the next few blogs will show you how to start to move forward and feel less stuck. The first thing to do is to decide that you are going to do something about it. You have to decide you are ready to stop complaining and then make it important that life becomes different. You reach the stage where what you need and your happiness is the most important thing - others may have to take a back seat while you prioritise this.

As well as a team around me and doing more of what I love and am good at, I also wanted to boost my fitness, so am taking steps towards getting much fitter again. I have had a session with a trainer, been weighed and measured, and now have a new programme to work through.
It has given me a bit of a boost as well as finding events that I can join in with – a 5km in March which will be about right for training (as long as the snow holds off!).
What have you been procrastinating about? I speak to lots of nurses who want to make changes and don’t seem to know where to start. If you have achieved something before that you want to have another go at then you can use the same strategy as before – whether that is working with someone, going to a particular place, reading and research, joining a club or anything else then start to re-do what you did before for the same results.
If you are trying something new, then find someone who has got the same results that you want and see how they did it. It is like following a recipe – if someone else has done it then maybe you can do it too by doing the same thing.

What are your intentions for this year? When I reviewed my 2009 I looked at what was going well and what I wanted to change and one of the things that came across strongly was ‘team’. I am very good at some aspects of happynurses and not so good at others. I need a team of people around me to take on the roles I am not so good at to free up my time to focus on speaking, coaching, writing and creating new things. At the end of last year I met a woman who has been helping me to arrange events and this has totally transformed the way I am planning the business and what I can do, as I know that creating the talks and doing them is what I am good at, not the organizing and tech parts. What do you do well, that you would like to do more of, and what would you like to do less of? This can be at home as well as work. We can, as nurses, think we have to be good at everything but we can also ask for help. A team that has a variety of people with different strengths and skills is vital. We have also found this in the pub quiz as last week there were 5 of us instead of 2 and we had a broader range of knowledge. Who do you want on your team, happynurses? If you need some inspiration remember the teleseminar today January 25th at 20.00 – join us and find some ways to get motivated this year. Click here to go to the teleseminar details.

Nurses get ready for 2010 by starting to think now about what you want and how you can get there. This could start with the end of this year – the festive period and all the jobs and tasks that go along with that. Whether you are working or not it is always a difficult time with lots to do and think about.
Get some help is the first thing – lots of women end up doing 99% of the work and then feeling frazzled even if their families are having a good time! Take some time out, have a date with your partner and ensure you feel cared for. It is likely to be busy with more swine flu so taking time to relax and care for ourselves is vital. I will also be doing some shifts so am there with you all!
