The Wonder of Coaching

Finally this week it is good to review where you are each w eek. I was coaching one of my clients this week and she was telling me how useful she found it to use a notebook to review all her actions, plans, dreams and ideas. We can get scared that we will forget our dreams and not do them, but if you write them all down then they will always be there when you need them.
You can use a notebook in a number of ways to help you:
• Write down your goals and look at them regularly so that you know where you are going • Create your weekly action plan of small steps and cross them off when you have done them • Write mind maps of all your ideas to capture them in one place and take your mind on a holiday! • Do a weekly review to see where you are and what you will do the following week • Keep a record of spending or food eaten to show you what is really going on in an area of your life. • Write down your ‘to-do’ list and cross off the items as you work through them for a feeling of satisfaction • Keep your notebooks to look at later – you can see how far you have come in your life • Write a gratitude list each evening or once a week, listing all the things you are grateful for in your life • Make a list of all the things in life that are draining you - like odd jobs around the house, things that need sorting out at work or people you need to contact and do one a day to clear some of the mental clutter
Let me know how you get on, happynurses!

Lastly this week, review what happened and how you felt about it. I have now started to look at what I said I would do each week and give myself a mark ‘out of 10’ as to how well I did. This is not about results (although getting great results is good) it is looking at the actions I said I would take and how well I actually did on taking them. This ensures I am honest and not just carrying the activities over to the following week.
This is the first week I have done this and will see how it goes. I like to adapt what I do now as I have been following this system for a while and like to make changes to improve how it works for me.
You may have aspects of your work or nursing life that need to be changed and taking action is the only way that will happen. It is easy to get side-tracked sometimes and not do what we said which is why writing it down and reviewing it is so important – we become more accountable to ourselves.
So, to review:
Complete the wheel of life for NOW Complete it for your future Write all this down in your coaching notebook Identify the first step that will get you there Take the first step and then subsequent ones Each week see how you have done in relation to your action plan Get a coach or buddy to help you through the difficult parts Have fun with it – it is supposed to be enjoyable!

Once you know what you really really want you can start to look for it, using a variety of methods. We all know that doing the same thing gets the same results but how often do you try to do something in a new way? How many different ways have you used to find a job/new house/man of your dreams/lose weight/get fit/give up smoking? If it is less than 10 you probably need to expand your possibilities and start to do things in a different way! Look back at what you have done in the past and how you have succeeded in any area. This will give you one or more of your success strategies. We all have strategies. Some of them give us the results we want and some produce results we don't want. Look at how you have succeeded in the past and keep doing that but add in more strategies to expand your possibilities and chances of success. Find out how others are getting the results you want. Ask them what they do to move forward and achieve great relationships/lose weight/find a job they love. Working with a coach or mentor is another great way to keep you on track – someone who can encourage or guide you to the result or goal that you want for yourself. Do something new each day towards your goal and see how different the results are! Remember – there are two ways to go – results or excuses...are you getting the results you want? If not, you are probably making excuses somewhere in life..... Just taking action, any action, will move you forward and give you new possibilities....stop making those excuses and move forward in 2010, or even today!

Last week I had some time out from happynurses and spent it with my family – sisters, Mum, nephews and my sister's lovely cat! It was lovely to be in a family environment with lots going on - piano being played, games of scrabble, music and the school run, a party with fireworks and some food I did not have to cook myself – they had all made a real effort as I have to have gluten-free as I have coeliac disease. Some of this has made me realise what I am missing in my own life. This can happen to you too. This is not to make you feel disillusioned with life or unhappy that you don't have what you want, but helps you to focus on what you do want. If others have a partner and you don't -how can you take steps to find one? Sitting at home moping about not having one will certainly not do it! Neither will constantly complaining about your job/ lack of money/ or boredom. The first principle of personal development is to take responsibility. This does not mean to 'beat yourself up' over the results you have but to know that it is up to you to get different results in life – to find that nursing job, leave the profession and do something new or find a partner you can love. Take responsibility and look at how to get different results. Work with a coach and start to move towards the life you will love....

Being clear what you want out of life is a great way to help you to take the required action. One of my clients has emailed me a fabulous 12 month goal for herself, specific and detailed about what she will achieve. This is expanded with lots of detail – emotional and based on her values, about what she will be doing when she has more money and more freedom to travel, learn, spend time with her partner, and give more time to causes she really cares about. If you think this is impossible for you, then find people who have done it and get immersed and involved in their lives and methods. If other people can do it, then you can too!
Nursing can become overwhelming if you are not careful – giving all your time and energy to others at work, plus at home will leave you drained and exhausted. Take time out for you. Relax, have fun and find some way to express another part of you - for me it was singing lessons that started to expand my life, but it will be something different for you. Other coaching clients of mine have started to join walking groups, dance, ride horses, join amdram groups and attend course in subjects that interest them outside work. Find just one thing you would love to learn, try or do and book it up today before you change your mind or the fear kicks in!

If you are currently looking to make any changes in life then start to look at where your focus is: are you looking at all the possibilities there are or are you looking at all the reasons why it could not possibly happen? I have worked with nurses who have started off thinking that a job they love will not exist and will never be something they could achieve, and yet a few weeks later they are starting a job that is a great match for them, which they would not have 'seen' initially or if they had, may not have applied for thinking that 'someone else will get it'. Someone else will always get the job if you don't ever apply for it! Join the online community www.happynurses.co.uk

Transforming your life can feel like a massive thing to do and is scary, but it only happens one day at a time. If this thought keeps you awake at night, then think of all the things you have ever done and how each small step added up to make big results – having children, finding a new nursing job, planning a wedding, moving house, they all happen one day at a time. Taking action on anything will change your results – especially if you do something each day – 365 actions a year! Coaching my client is always an interesting process as they are all different and get different results and ideas, even from a similar process. One of the most amazing things that happens is that they gain a much clearer idea of who they really are and this leads them to look at jobs and social activities that they would have missed without the coaching. They would have gone down the same route and asked themselves the same questions, if any. If you are a nurse looking for a new job then start with finding out who you really are, underneath the label of 'nurse' and/or 'Mum'. Think about what you love to do at work, which activities really give you a sense of satisfaction and which are challenges you love. Look at who you love to spend time with outside work as well as on your team. Find more of theses people! Look at things you used to love when you were around 7 years old as you will probably still enjoy them to some degree – whether it was animals, cooking or performing that you loved. Add some fun in just for you! My clients who do this find it can transform their lives just tapping into activities they really enjoy!

The final part of moving forward is about gratitude and celebration! We need to set ourselves up to succeed and to keep taking small steps to move on in life. We can do this by being grateful for where we are now, even if it is not where we want to be in the future. Each day or week you can write a list of things you are grateful for, no matter how small it is. Every tiny thing and each person, action or gift is something to be grateful for. You can also carry something around with you to remind you to be grateful – like the gratitude rock in 'The Secret' movie. Give thanks and gratitude for everything. This makes you feel better, gives our more positive energy to others and will start to attract opportunities to you. Then celebrate every success, action and step along they way towards what you want. Even if things are not going exactly as planned you can still celebrate as this also changes your energy. Do this with your children, partner, and team. Create a big chart to record all your successes and take time to give positive feedback to everyone that helps you to get to where you want to be! Have fun with all this – put some of these steps in place and see how your results and energy changes! |

In order to move forward you need to know what it is that you do want. Generally individuals spend lots of time and energy thinking about what they don't want and complaining about it to their friends, partner, colleagues and family. If this is you, then take some time to notice how you and those around you, talk about their lives. Is it full of problems and challenges and 'what is wrong' or do you have people who encourage and support you and help you to move forward in life? We all need help and support and I have recently joined a 'mastermind' group which we look at what is going well, our challenges and then brainstorm solutions. The call ends with each of us committing to taking some action in the following week to move forward. Find a group of 3 to 5 others who want to make changes in their lives, then set up a weekly or fortnightly group to find solutions and help each other to make changes. This could make all the difference. You can of course hire a coach to help you individually which will also give you amazing results. See Claire's profile on facebook |

How is your life balance? This is a question I ask my clients a lot, as well as asking myself! I have to admit that in the last few weeks my own life balance has not been great so I am now focussing on altering the balance in my own life and also looking forward to where I want to be in the next 6 - 12 months. How do you start this process for yourself? The first tool is the 'wheel of life' which helps you to look at different sections of your life and identify areas in life that are going well and ones that need some improvement. Maybe your relationship is going well but you have had enough of your current job? Perhaps you are really fit and healthy but need to spend more time with your children. It could be that none of your life areas are going well... see the Nursing Times article here. The measurement is the first stage – how is your life in each area, marked out of 10? Health, relationships, money, social, fun and adventure, family, work, learning, community, spiritual or any other areas that are important to you. Then spend some time thinking of how you would really like your life to be – in all those areas. How do you want your relationships or your work to be? How do you want to feel on a daily basis? What do you really really want for yourself? Look at what you can do in 3 months or 6 months and start to work towards it. It can be a lovely way to spend time just thinking about where you would love to be next Spring or Summer. Many small steps can all add up to make a big change...think of all the small steps that become any success in life – bringing up children, creating a relationship or career success. One step and one day at a time. Asking these questions is the first stage in finding a great way to live and creating a new future if that is what you want. You are not stuck where you are now and you do not have to stay there if you don't want to! Join the online community www.happynurses.co.uk |

I had a really inspiring thought last week – it amazed me really, and then I was amazed that I was amazed!
I sat on the sofa with a notebook (one of my favourite things!) and wrote a list of all my coaching clients and the successes they have had, plus my new clients and what could be possible for them. It was a really rewarding activity. It made me realise two main things – how incredible coaching can be, and what changes can be made by working with a coach, and also I realised that one of my real dreams had come true. When I read my first life coaching book many years ago I decided that being a coach would be a great job to do, and yesterday was the first time I really allowed myself to realise that I was one! I coach people for a living and have written a book too – wow!
What have you achieved that you might not recognise as a great achievement – children? A lovely home? Promotion? Getting to visit a dream location somewhere in the world, having a great relationship?
Take time today to reflect on any achievement (no matter how small) that you can feel proud of and then look at which one you would like next.
My next one is to be running regular workshops for nurses and changing lives that way too – we have lots coming up this year so look out for them on the ezine! 'The Happynurses Guide to Creating a Balanced Life' - order it here!

What do you really want and how can you get there? Probably not by doing what you have always done! This week has been one of reflection and change for me – how about you?
Make sure you have knowledge before you make any changes – find out what others have done to get their results and work with them or model their actions to get the same results yourself. Have more fun, laugh more, spend more time learning instead of being passive in front of the TV, if you have to do the ‘chores’ make the time work harder with inspiring audio – there is lots on the happynurses membership site – and really take the time out to find some solutions to what you want and how you might start the process. Find a mentor and coach to work with you – I cannot stress how great this is and how quickly you can make changes working with someone who can motivate, encourage and teach you along the way.

I have been working out a lot of ‘stuff’ over the past few weeks as I have already said and looking at what works and what doesn’t in life and my business. No doubt about it, I would do things differently if I could do them again, but we don’t get that chance. Lots of my coaching clients say to me ‘I wish I’d known all this before’ but there is no point thinking about what you would have done differently in the past. You can change what you do today, though, to give you better results in the future.
This week take a look at what you would have done differently in your past and what skills and knowledge you have now to make better choices. Then make sure you are living from the place of making better choices, not still replaying the patterns of your past. We can all change our habits and choices and this will create a different future. Work with a coach for even greater results and to learn some techniques that you didn’t know existed!

Reward yourself for action as well as results. Sometimes the results are not in our control and sometimes we make a wrong guess. Any action should be rewarded as it makes us more likely to take more action in the future. Results can be rewarded with even bigger prizes!
Always have fun doing it too. If your success plan is’ too hard’ or not taking you in the right direction, then take a look at what you want instead and alter your course. Get a great coach to help you with this plan and enjoy!
So, that is my 8 step process:

Keep doing what works and change what doesn't. We can tend to keep doing what we think ‘should’ work even when we have evidence to the contrary. Look at what does work – what is taking you closer to your goal? Do this more and stop doing what doesn’t work. We are creatures of habit, but some of them are not helpful in creating success!
This is the good thing about looking at your goals and plans each week – you will know what is working and what isn’t so you can change it. This is how slimming clubs work, of course – they keep you on track so you can change what you do if it isn’t getting the results you want.

Then you need to review your goal and actions daily or weekly at least. You need to keep reviewing the plan so you can see how well you are doing in comparison to where you wanted to be. Enjoy the feeling of moving forward and taking action. Keep connecting with what you want as in a busy life this can get moved aside for less important tasks. This is where a coach or buddy comes in handy – they will help to keep you on track. An appointment with a personal trainer is harder to cancel than a gym session with just you!
Set aside time each day or at least each week to check where you are and create another action plan – I like Sundays for this, but any time will do – whatever fits in with our schedule.

Create action plans - focussing on what you do want and not what you don't. What would be the very first step in getting to where y ou want to be –buy some fruit or a fitness magazine, smiling at that man you fancy instead of looking the other way, looking online for holidays, asking a friend to go to salsa classes with you?
The action plan is the next step – write the action steps down. I use a notebook so I always know where the plan is, and I can tick off all the actions once they are done. This gives a feeling of momentum and achievement. Decide what you are gong to do and then DO IT! This step cannot be by passed!
Ideas – research-coach-goals-action….

Set goals – make them measurable, and visualise them. Make sure you know exactly where you are aiming for – in health, money, work or relationships. You can set goals for any or all areas of life and then add to them once they are reached. Visualising them and thinking about yourself in the future is another useful way to ‘set’ the goals in your mind to make taking action easier.
For help with goal setting – go to the membership part of the website or come on one of our courses – you will never look at goals in the same light. Once you have truly stepped into your future goal you can get incredible results – whether that is a new man, job or figure!

Get a coach for tips, motivation and accountability. Find a buddy and mentor – work with someone else who can support, encourage and direct you. I have used coaches and 1:1 trainers for my health, business, wealth, confidence and romantic lives and they have all been responsible in helping me to make changes and take bigger steps than I would have done alone. As a coach I know how powerful working with another person who is there to encourage you and cheer you on can be!
Find a team, even one other person can help you to move through the difficult bits of whatever it is you want to do.
So – have an idea, research everything you can, find a coach or buddy. We are almost half-way through!
